They are stunning little cars. But are they reliable? Or will they eat away ones wallet and cost $1000 a year in maintenance? I'm asking because my girlfriend is considering getting one for a DD

A guy at my church/HS has one. I never hear him complain about it. That's not much info though.

You know what they say about TTs. If you wanna play, you gotta pay.

It’s a Mk4 generation VW/Audi. That means that anything with a 1.8t will be challenged, but if you can find a VR6 you should be good.

Sluggish as hell. I was much disappointed when I drove one.

The Quattro cars share suspension and the Haldex based AWD system with the Mk4 R32.
The FWD cars have less hp @ 180, but retain the 6 speed gearbox.
They are quite reliable and the 1.8T is a stout engine. The cars have minor issues here and there but any issues encountered are certainly worth it due to the great cost to performance ratio these cars offer. Seriously nice examples can be had for under 9 grand (225hp/Quattro car).
The later cars (2003-2004 , possibly 05) offered the 3.2 liter VR6 that became the powerplant in the VW R32. An utterly fantastic engine with total reliability and a sound that rivals some exotics. Unfortunately they were only offered with a DSG gearbox, some say there were manuals but I have never seen one.

I looked at these about 4 or 5 years ago. The biggest complaint that I saw and that I remember are some of the interior plastics. Apparently the glove box handle has a tendency to fall off.

A friend of mine had one for a while. He broke a timing belt right at the service interval. Not sure if this is a common problem of not. After a 20 minute drive in the snow I thought it was a pretty fun car. Good luck!
